Master Mason
by Brother David L. Rivers
Raised: January 26, 2002
|
From ages beyond memory's recall,
Master Mason trod a path of honor, tall
but alone and subject to man's mortality.
No less afraid, nor stronger, nor surer, he
bound himself as we in sacred obligation,
to truth, justice, brotherhood, and nation.
Born of ancient Templars forced to fly,
from native lands by prince and prelate's lie.
On moor and heath did hunted brethren roam,
The hidden lodge their momentary home.
True brother's trust never was betrayed,
the sacred obligation ever they obeyed.
The river of time has borne mankind along,
and memory of that antique age is gone.
Masons' secrets that did life and limb preserve,
no more that solemn purpose now does serve;
in present day of wealth and ease and mirth,
are sacred touchstones with Freemasonry's birth.
Oh, my brothers to Masonic virtues e're be true,
for soul of Master Mason lives on in you.
To all who need, be fount of hope and charity,
to your last breath defend your nation's liberty.
And when your faithful suffering is through,
Almighty God and brothers past will welcome you.

I dedicate this poem to my brothers of Waco Lodge 92
and most especially to my conductor and friend Brother Jeff Davies.
